Coasteering Platja Sant Pol, Costa Brava
Experience the thrill of coasteering at Platja Sant Pol in Costa Brava, where you’ll jump, swim, and explore the stunning Mediterranean coastline with expert guides from Aventura Girona
What is Coasteering?
Coasteering is an adventure sport that mixes swimming, climbing, cliff jumping, and hiking along the rocky intertidal zone. Participants scramble across rocks, leap into turquoise waters, swim through hidden coves, and discover sea caves and marine wildlife—always under the watchful eye of experienced instructors for safety and fun. This activity offers a close-up encounter with the dramatic landscapes of Costa Brava, blending excitement, natural discovery, and physical challenge.
History of Coasteering
Coasteering originated in the early 1980s along the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. It began as a way for mountain climbers and surfers to explore rocky cliffs, coves, and shorelines by scrambling, swimming, and jumping without the use of ropes or boards. The term "coasteering," first coined by Edward C Pyatt in 1973 combining "mountaineering" and "coast," was popularized in the mid-1980s by Andy Middleton of TWYF Adventures, who developed it into a commercially guided activity. By the 1990s, coasteering had grown into a popular adventure sport across the UK, spreading to other scenic coastal regions such as Cornwall and now worldwide, including the beautiful Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. The activity is celebrated for its mix of physical challenge, exploration, and close-up interaction with coastal nature.
