Coasteering: Definition, History, Benefits, and Equipment

DEFINITION: Coasteering is a relatively new adventure activity that involves exploring and journeying through the impact zone between the levels of high and low tide, often including total immersion in seawater. It is a cross between rock pooling and an obstacle course, where participants move along the line where the sea meets the land, climbing over boulders or swimming across pools. Coasteering is a physical activity that requires a certain level of fitness and can be enjoyed by individuals or groups.

HISTORY: Although all aspects of coasteering have been informally practiced by people for a very long time, if only as a means of access to a cut-off cove beyond a headland, the term appears first to have been used in 1973. The activity was first developed commercially by surfers in Pembrokeshire in the 1980s and has since spread throughout the UK and into other countries. The advisory organization for coasteering in the UK is the National Coasteering Charter (NCC), and the activity is recognized by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.
