ING Group is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services corporation headquartered in Amsterdam. ING is an abbreviation for Internationale Nederlanden Groep.

Overview
ING offers services in retail, direct, commercial, investment, wholesale, and private banking, as well as asset management and insurance. It is one of the biggest banks in the world, with total assets of US$967.8 billion. As of 2020, ING served 53.2 million clients in over 40 countries. ING is a member of the Inter-Alpha Group of Banks and has been designated as a Significant Institution, directly supervised by the European Central Bank since 2014.
History
ING Group's origins trace back to the Netherlands with two insurance companies and the Dutch government's banking services.
Key historical milestones:
- 1845: The fire insurance company Assurantie Maatschappij tegen Brandschade de Nederlanden van 1845was founded.
- 1863: The life insurance company Nationale Levensverzekerings Bankwas founded.
- 1927: The Dutch government initiated a re-organization of Dutch banks which resulted in the creation of the Nederlandsche Middenstands Bank (NMB).
- 1986: Post office banking services were privatized as Postbank N.V.
- 1989: Postbank N.V merged with NMB bank to form NMB Postbank Groep.
- 1991: The insurance branch of Nationale-Nederlandenand the banking branch of "NMB Postbank Groep" merged to form ING Group.
- 2025: ING reached an agreement to sell its Russian operations to Global Development JSC.
Recent Developments
ING posted a full-year 2024 net profit of €6,392 million. The mobile primary customer base increased by 1.1 million in 2024, reaching 14.4 million. Net core lending growth was €28 billion (4%), and net core deposits growth was €47 billion (7%). Total income increased to a record €22.6 billion, with fee income surpassing €4 billion for the first time. The full-year return on equity was 13.0% and a final cash dividend of €0.71 per share has been proposed.
